Our Love of the Sea

(Written by Sultan)

Our relation with the sea goes way back in time. It all started when dad was very young.

Dad was born in Bay Du Tombeau and has always spent a lot of time on the beach admiring all kinds of boats coming and going in and out of the Port. His fascination of boats and his love of the sea was thus started without him realizing it.

That passion for the sea got even more pronounced when he read the book "Kon Tiki" which is about a true story. It tells of the quest of a young Norwegian explorer named Thor Heyerdahl. He wanted to prove  that the initial inhabitants of the Polynesian islands were actually from South America rather than from Asia as was previously believed. Thor actually built  a raft with traditional methods and him and a few friends let themselves drift all the way from Perou to the island of Raroia in the middle of the Pacific about a hundred later. He made a book about it and a few months  back a movie was released about the big adventure. The movie is definitely worth watching. Some links below

Then as he got older, his work and later family life got in the way of his passion but his dream to own his own boat and to explore at least part of the oceans stayed.

A chance for dad to live in close proximity to the sea came again in the early 1990's when I was just born (I have only been around since 1991) when he applied and obtained the right to live and work on the Island of Agalega in the north of Mauritius near to the equator. Mum and dad being both primary school teachers they got the job together and went there the first time in 1993 and then again a few years later, spending a total of 2 and a half years there.

The picture below was in Agalega on the beach.
